Among the Indian Nations
on the plains the turtle was revered as a symbol of long life,
protection and fertility. The wearing of the turtle pouch was
a reminder to the wearer that his or her life is a precious gift
from their parents, and that they had the responsibility to marry,
and pass on the gift of birth and life, so as the thrive would
grow and prosper. Such vigilant protection of life was essential
to the Indians sense of well being.
